Special Guest Lecture by Reverend Sherry Shanks

Event Start Date: Sunday 29th August, 2010
Event End Date: Sunday 29th August, 2010

Special Guest Lecture

Reverend Sherry Shanks

(Associate Minister, First Christian Church of Lewisville, TX)

Sunday, August 29th, 11am at the Vedanta Center

“Spiritual Retreat as a Contemplative Practice”

Reverend Sherry Shanks was first introduced to Vedanta through a graduate course on “World Religions,” at Perkins School of Theology, SMU. When Rev. Shanks, along with five other graduate students at SMU, engaged in dialog with members of the Vedanta tradition, she responded with an open and embracing heart and was especially “struck by the common spiritual journey that we all shared.”

Rev. Shanks is the Associate Minister at the First Christian Church of Lewisville. Currently she is undergoing her Masters of Divinity at Perkins School of Theology, SMU, in order to enter the Hospice ministry or become a hospital chaplain.

For the past nine years, Rev. Shanks has included, as an important part of her spiritual practice, an annual individual retreat of prayer and scripture at Red Plains Benedictine Monastery in Piedmont, Oklahoma. We are privileged to have Rev. Shanks as our special guest—not only for her broad, ecumenical outlook—but for her uniquely contemplative perspective of Christian mysticism and spiritual practice.

Quote of the day
Devotion is really the mind hankering after that which we love and desire most. Whatever we thus desire with all our mind name, fame, a friend, an animal- is really our god. The Gita says: 'In whatever form a person worships Me, in that form I reach him.' Say the Upanishads 'If one worships anything for the qualities of that thing, one's love is limited and so is the result of that love. But if one worships Me in all things, then one attains Me, the Unlimited. Therefore love the Atman alone, for then the object of your love will never change or perish
