Ramakrishna Vedanta Society of North Texas

Ramakrishna Sharanam

March 1, 2010

Dear Friends and Devotees,

On Sunday, January 31, Mr. Michael Morrow presented an all-day Eco-Spiritual Retreat which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. To gain a greater insight into our bio-spiritual potential and respect for nature, Mr. Morrow spoke in the morning on “Discovering Our Evolutionary Roots,” followed by a guided meditation walk on our human interconnectedness with all life.

Then to probe the link between Evolutionary Theory and deep inner transformation, Mr. Morrow spoke in the afternoon session on “Overcoming Destructive Emotions – an Evolutionary, Non-Dual View,” followed by a practice of drawing personalized Mandalas for inner and outer transformation. Throughout the day, there were sessions for questions and answers and open discussion. On Tuesday, February 9th, the Vedanta Society was invited by Dr. Ruben Habito to give an “Introduction to Vedanta” to his World Religions class at Perkins School of Theology, SMU. The presentation was followed by questions and answers, and Dr. Habito encouraged interested students to visit the Center for follow-up interviews.

In spite of a record-breaking snowfall which canceled the public observance of Shiva Ratri, the four worships to Lord Shiva were performed privately as scheduled on Friday, February 12th, on behalf of the devotees by the resident minister and president of the Society, who prepared the cooked offerings. A public worship to Lord Shiva was then observed along with Ramakrishna’s Birthday Observance on Sunday, February 14th—which was a special two-hour puja enhanced by Indian devotional singing. The Sunday Observance also included a talk, arati, devotee flower offering, and potluck. In spite of freezing weather many devotees attended.

On Sunday, February 21st Dr. Lisa Owen from the Dept. of Art History at UNT, gave a fascinating visual and descriptive account of “Devotion to the Buddha at Ajanta,” followed by a lively question-and-answer session concerning how Buddhism and Hinduism influenced each other and later elements of Christian cathedrals in Europe.

We look forward to another full month of spiritual events in March. Please join us!

With prayerful regards,
Pravrajika Brahmaprana
Resident Minister
